GM 6.2L EcoTec3 L86 V-8

General Motors' 6.2L EcoTec3 is a modern high compression, direct fuel injection V-8 engine found in 2014 to current Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck models. The engine is rated at a peak 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, which are relatively high output ratings for a naturally aspirated engine that displaces a mere 376 cubic inches. Despite its large size, the engine is rated up to 15 city mpg and 21 highway mpg for 2018 model year trucks.

The 6.2L V-8's total output and low end performance are largely the result of the engine's relatively high 11.5 to 1 compression ratio. As a result of this high compression ratio, the engine is required to run on a minimum 91 octane gasoline to avoid detonation/knocking. Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks equipped with the 6.2L V-8 are rated at a maximum 15 city mpg and 21 highway mpg for the 2018 model year; actual EPA estimations will be vary by vehicle configuration and driving conditions.

GM's 6.2L features an active fuel management system commonly referred to industry wide as cylinder deactivation. In order to improve fuel efficiency, the system will deactivate 4 of the 8 cylinders under the appropriate driving conditions. The engine can rapidly transition from 4 and 8 cylinder operation modes.
